The Trades Union Congress (TUC) have released a briefing paper on what it could mean for the UK to leave the EU following a referendum. The briefing paper highlights the Health and Safety gains that have been made as a result of EU membership. Since the famous “Six Pack” Regulations came into force in 1992, there has been a massive drop in worker fatalities for example. However the paper points out that there has been a plateau in the decline of workplace fatalities since 2010. This, the paper puts down to a decrease in UK government inspection activity. Whilst the overall effects of a UK exit from the EU are unclear, the paper predicts the possibility of further Health and Safety deregulation. Click here to see the full paper.
